Beware of Ransomware

In addition to viruses, trojans, worms, adware and malware, there are new threats from the Internet in the form of Ransomware. Ransomware is software that is designed to block access to your computer until money is paid. You can prevent most threats from occurring.

Halt! Stop! Cancel! – What to do if your web browser is compromised.

Don’t panic.

Do NOT call any foreign phone number that is listed on the error screen.

If sirens go off or loud beeps and noises are coming out of your computer’s speakers, mute or lower your computer’s volume.

Close the window, if possible.

Force the Program/Application to Quit.

On a Windows PC:

If you cannot close the page or web browser, Force Quit the Application, e.g. Edge, Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome.

Hold the Control+Alt+Delete keys and Open the Task Manager.

Select the web browser application such as Edge and press the “End Task” button.

On a Mac:

Hold Option+Apple (Command)+Escape to open the Force Quit window.

Select the Application, e.g. Safari, Chrome, Opera.

Press the “Force Quit” button.


 

Prevention

Be cautious of bundled software that comes with freeware/shareware. Do not install software you do not need.

Do not give any information or access to your computer to a stranger.

Major companies such as Microsoft will not call you to tell you your computer is compromised. Hang up the phone.

If you answer a phone call from a foreigner, do not run commands they give you.

Run a reputable Anti-Virus and/or Anti-Malware software package.

Run an ad-blocking program such as AdblockPlus.org
