Prevention

Be cautious of bundled software that comes with freeware/shareware. Do not install software you do not need.

Do not give any information or access to your computer to a stranger.

Major companies such as Microsoft will not call you to tell you your computer is compromised. Hang up the phone.

If you answer a phone call from a foreigner, do not run commands they give you.

Run a reputable Anti-Virus and/or Anti-Malware software package.

Run an ad-blocking program such as AdblockPlus.org
